Research Areas:

The Center's mission statement is to create, expand, apply, and disseminate knowledge on a wide range of economic and business issues and problems in agriculture, policy, natural resource use, rural areas, agribusiness for the benefit of the people of Louisiana, the nation, and the global community through teaching, research, and service programs, as advanced by the Land Grant University System.

On-going projects include: economic issues affecting the U. S. fruit and vegetable system; impact analyses and decision strategies for agricultural research; dynamic econometric modeling of U. S. and Louisiana grain markets; the role of property rights in incentive based environmental management for agriculture; an economic analysis of rural real estate market activity in Louisiana; an evaluation of international markets for southern commodities; the agricultural economic effects of multilateral trade agreements and regional trading blocks; economic impacts of changing patterns of vertical coordination on agribusiness in Louisiana; firm level decision making strategies for animal agriculture producers under risk and uncertainty; competitiveness and sustainability of the Louisiana milk production, pricing, and marketing system; private strategies, public policies, and food systems performance; modeling fiscal and public service impacts of changes in economic activity on Louisiana communities; economic analysis of rice production and farm management in Louisiana; economic evaluation of production and management decisions on Louisiana sugarcane farms; consumer and meat handler attitudes toward compulsory country-or-origin labeling of fresh meats; Louisiana agricultural statistics and economic perspectives; food demand, nutrition and consumer behavior; modeling the economic policies on southern agriculture.

Agricultural economics, agricultural business, agricultural finance, production economics and mangement, agricultural policy, econometrics/forecasting, international trade, economics of the environment, regional economics, marketing, land valuation, natural resource economics, and geographic information systems.

Special Capabilities and Facilities:

The staff includes sixteen Agricultural Economists all with Ph.D.'s. Each one has disciplinary expertise in one or more of the areas of research expertise. Special facilities are the Geographical Information System Laboratory with four major workstations and a large digitizing surface, linked to a University with a geo-referenced database through the fiber optic network.

Research Equipment:

Eight state-of-the-art micro-computers equipped with curent software for geo-referenced data analysis.  Approval of the LSU Agricultural Center and Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station for use is possible via grant or contract if such activity contributes to the mission and program of the Department.
