Research Areas:
The Department's research mission centers around major goals of: 1) Understand the effects of environmental factors on agricultural productivity. 2) Developing plant cultivars that are adapted to Louisiana growing conditions. #) understand the effects of agricultural activities on the quality of environment components (soil, water, and air). 4) Develop agricultural practices that improved the quality of the environment.
Specific areas of study include: plant breeding and genetics, plant growth and development, health and management of environmental components of soil, water, and air. Crop research projects are concentrated on Louisiana's traditional crops of: corn, cotton, forage grasses and legumes, rice, soybean, sugarcane, and wheat. Soils research projects are concentrated in the studies of fertility, microbiology, mineralogy, chemistry, and physics. Environmental research projects are concerned with pesticide degradation and movement through soils, organic waste disposal and composting, nutrient management, land use planning, and reclamation of contaminated soils.
Areas of Expertise:
Faculty members of the Department of Agronomy recieved their graduate trainging from major Land-Grant Universities. Most faculty members have both teaching and research responsibilities. Areas of research specialization include: breeding and genetics, basic plant biotechnology and physiology, soil characterization and land use planning, soil and water quality, soil chemistry, physics, and microbiology.
Special Capabilities and Facilities:
The Department is located in M. B. Sturgis Hall, an 85,000-square-foot building which contains 51 research laboratories, three multi-media equipped classrooms, four fully equipped teaching laboratories, and a student computing center. Besides faculty research laboratories, the department houses the State Soil Testing Laboratory, Plant Analyses Laboratory, Central Analytical Instrument Laboratory 9containg ICP and IC capabilities), and Cotton Fiber Quality Testing Laboratory.
