Research Areas:

The mission of the Dairy Science Department is to provide a program of study to educate undergraduate and graduate students in the scientific and business aspects of dairy production and dairy foods technology and to conduct research in these areas to benefit the producer, dairy food processor and consumer within the state, region and nation. There are ongoing research projects in each of the areas indicated as part of dairy production and dairy foods technology.

Areas of Expertise:

Faculty members have expertise in dairy cattle nutrition, management, genetics, reproductive physiology and animal biotechnology in the area of dairy production and in dairy microbiology, quality assurance, new product development, and dairy chemistry in the area of dairy foods technology.

Special Capabilities and Facilities:

The Department of Dairy Science is the only group in the state with the expertise to conduct a comprehensive program of teaching and research in dairy production and dairy food technology. It is one of the few departments in the United States and the only one in the Southeast that offers a comprehensive program of this type. In addition to the faculty expertise in various areas of dairy production and dairy food technology, a dairy cattle research farm and a functional processing plant are maintained to support the teaching and research programs.
