Research Areas:
The mission of the Citrus Research Station is to conduct research on horticultural crops including fruits (primarily citrus, low-chill peaches, blueberries) and vegetables (primarily tomatoes, cucumbers, garlic, and eggplants). Research includes cultural practices such as use of pesticides, cultivar trials, spacing, frost/freeze protection, and fertilization. Ongoing projects include vegetable production techniques and cultivar evaluation and fruit production techniques, cultural practices, and cultivar evaluation.
Areas of Expertise:
Includes one Professor in Horticulture (100%) and one Research Associates in Horticulture.
Special Capabilities and Facilities:
Specialize in citrus research with emphasis on freeze protection, insect & disease control techniques (especially citrus rust mites, citrus red mites, mealy bugs, leaf-footed bugs, thrips, citrus leaf minor and post bloom fruit drop and salt toxicity), vegetable production including tomatoes (greenhouse & field).
Research Equipment:
Seven (50-90 HP) tractors, one Ford, three new holand & two Kubota for vegetable and citrus production, one Ford backhoe, two FMC sprayers for vegetable production, two FMC sprayers for citrus production, and numerous implements, tools, mowers, etc.
