Research Areas:

Research projects conducted at this station are an integral part of state-wide investigations wherein field and laboratory data are obtained for use as the primary information source from which recommendations for economical animal and crop production may be prepared for distribution to scientists and clientele groups. Ongoing projects include: LAB01379-Beef cattle and swine performance testing; LABO3092-Grazing evaluation of cool-season grasses in central LA; LAB03096-Effect and control of pathological nematode and trematode parasites of beef cattle in central LA; LAB03176- Agronomic crops weed control research in the lower red river valley; LAB03338-Develop and assess precision farming technology and it's economic and environmental impact; LAB03334- Improving crop production though precision farming and improved practices; LAB03351- Improving seed quality and yeild of agronomic crops in Louisiana.

Areas of Expertise:

The five scientists including the Resident Director at this location include three animal scientists trained in nutrition animal production and reproductive physiology, one agronomist and one weed scientist. Also we have a veterinarian who manages the state diagnostic lab and is part time on staff for the station.

Special Capabilities and Facilities:

Highly fertile soil which varies from silt loam to heavy clay, large land area available for expansion, foundation seed plant for cleaning and processing seed, livestock performance testing facility, and livestock feeding facilities including a feed mill. The facility is located in the center of the state on a main highway adjacent to LSUA. Faculty have a strong applied agricultural background.

Research Equipment:

LAI 2000 plant canopy analyzer with data logger and sensor to measure leaf area, quantum sensor for measuring light, APC-20 small plot combine, Hege 1000 series small plot drill, John Deere planter with max emerge units and cones to plant small plots, and seed laboratory germinators, accelerated aging chamber, and other tabletop equipment.
