Research Areas:

The Southeast Research Station's research program focuses on forage agronomy, dairy cattle nutrition, especially forage nutrition, and the interrelationships between nutrition and reproduction in lactating dairy animals. Dairy waste disposal research was initiated in 1994 under a USDA grant. The Southeast Research Station also houses the LSU Agricultural Center's Forage Quality Laboratory which serves researchers at other Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station units as well as forage, beef and dairy producers. The lab analyses approximately 7,500 forage research samples from other units and 3500 producer samples yearly.

Areas of Expertise:

The agronomy program concentrates on forages adapted to the soils and climates in Southeast Louisiana which are high enough in quality to support economical levels of milk production. Variety trials of forages widely used in the area are also a part of the agronomy research program. The animal research program concentrates on utilization of these forages in dairy cattle rations, including the protein, energy and mineral supplementation necessary to achieve acceptable levels of milk production as well as reproduction.

Special Capabilities and Facilities:

The LSU Agricultural Center Forage Quality Laboratory has the capability for wet chemistry analysis of forages and feeds for protein, fiber, minerals and digestibility. The wet chemistry capability is augmented by a Near Infra-Red Spectrophotometer which provides quick (within seconds) analysis of protein and fiber content based on calibration by wet chemistry.

Research Equipment:

Near Infra-Red Spectrophotometer available for limited share use.
