Research Areas:

The mission of the Department is to assure the continued and or increased productivity of horses and food animals for the benefit of the people of Louisiana and the nation through innovative animal health research and through transfer of contemporary concepts of animal health management to students and the public. Ongoing projects deal with genetic alterations of pathogenic agents to either gain a better understanding of disease mechanisms or to produce potential vaccines ecology and control of internal parasites of horses and cattle, transgenic fish, development and testing of bacterial and antiviral peptides, and the role of stress on immune function and pathogenicity studies of bacterial disease in cattle.

Areas of Expertise:

The faculty have research expertise in the fields of:
Bacteriology
Immunology
Parasitology
Pathology
Molecular biology
Clinical medicine

Special Capabilities and Facilities:

Modern well-equipped molecular genetic laboratories; laboratories to conduct both and humoral and cell mediate immunological studies against viral and bacteria pathogens; and state of the art microscopic image analysis equipment.
