Research Areas:

The Gene Probes and Expression Systems Laboratory(GeneLab) serves Louisiana scientists as a support and resource facility for research in molecular and cellular biology. The goals of this facility are to develop and provide research expertise and tools to university and industrial scientists and to train researchers in the effective use of new technologies. The laboratory provides custom DNA synthesis, cloning, sequencing, PCR, gene expression, polyclonal and monoclonal antisera, and genetic immunization. Custom research projects and research services are provided by contract with the principal investigator. GeneLab is a training facility for scientists who wish to have hands on experience in specific molecular biology techniques. Current research projects include the role of glycoproteins in the cellular spread of Herpes viruses, genetic immunization of psittacine birds against Chlamydia psittaci, and the role of coronaviruses as enteric and respiratory pathogens.

Areas of Expertise:

Three PhD. Scientists in Molecular & Cell Biology, three staff molecular biologists.

Special Capabilities and Facilities:

GeneLab's DNA synthesis laboratory provides custom oligonucleotides which may be labeled with biotin, fluorescein, or digoxigenin, long-mers, phosphorothioate (antisence) oligonucleotides which may be labeled with biotin, fluorescein, or digoxigenin, long-mers, phosphorothioate (antisence) oligonucleotides, and phosphorylated oligonucleotides, and phosphorylated oligonucleotides. Antibody production, contract research projects, and DNA synthesis are provided to Louisiana researchers for the lowest possible cost. Consultation on molecular biology projects is available at no cost. Molecular biology reagents are provided to researchers at substantially discounted pricing. GeneLab's location, within the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, facilitates the undertaking of broad based research projects by providing faculty collaboration and core laboratories such as BI-3 Level Biocontainment Laboratory, Laboratory Animal Medicine, Flow Cytometry Laboratory, Analytical Systems Laboratory, Cytokine, Monocolonal Antibody and Lymphocyte Laboratories, Electron Microscopy Center, Cell and Organ Culture Laboratory, and Microbiological Media Preparation Laboratory.
