Research Areas:
The Louisiana Population Data Center was established at Louisiana State University in 1987 to provide technical support for nationally competitive research proposals in the social sciences and to serve Louisiana's population data needs. The Center has supported social science researchers from Psychology, Political Science, Human Ecology, Agricultural Economics, and Social Work. A number of services and resources are available through the Center including a Survey Research Laboratory, access to the ICPSR and other large secondary data sets, on-line data retrieval and information, GIS analysis, and population projections. Because it is self-supporting, research contracts and awards with national and local agencies have been funded by NSF, USDA, National Institute on Aging, Minerals Management Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, and the Rockefeller Foundation at the national level, and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, the Metropolitan Council of the City of Baton Rouge, and the Governor's Office of Elderly Affairs at the local and state level.
Areas of Expertise:
Demographic and population analyses, survey methods and applications, GIS analyses; data management.
Special Capabilities and Facilities:
The Center operates a computer-aided telephone interviewing (CATI) facility with state-of-the-art equipment and experienced personnel trained in sampling, questionnaire construction, and interviewing. The Center has facilities to produce recordable compact discs for storing and distributing data. A GIS lab is maintained for mapping of census and other demographic data. The Center maintains a presence on the Internet through its World Wide Web, ftp, and gopher services. The Center is a organizational representative for the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), providing access to a vast archive of social science data stored at Louisiana State University and the University of Michigan. The Center is the academic coordinating agency in Louisiana for the State Data Center (SC) program of the Bureau of Census.
