Research Areas:

The Center on Aging seeks an in-depth understanding of the genetics of aging and those diseases that accompany the aging process. Founded in 1991, the Center focuses on research pertaining to the genetics of healthy aging and under the following areas of expertise: gene regulation, type 2 diabetes, molecular endocrinology, immunosenescence, genomics, epidemiology, nutrition, frailty and fitness, pulmonology, cardiology, gastrointestinal aging, neuroscience, pharmacology, gene therapy and signal transduction in aging.
For the past seven years, Dr. Rothschild has been a Principal Investigator in a NIH study on the genetics of lung cancer, which is a disease that accompanies aging. The Center has also coordinated with the HEF Center for Healthy Aging, which was funded in 2002 with Dr. Jazwinski as the Principal Investigator. The Center for Healthy Aging constitutes a state-wide enterprise bringing together LSUHSC, LSU in Baton Rouge, and the Pennington Biomedical Research Center.

Special Capabilities and Facilities:

From the clinical perspective, Dr. Rothschild practices in a geriatric clinic for outpatients as well as three tertiary care centers. Dr. Jazwinski focuses on biomedical research components of the Center using a complete molecular biology laboratory, complete human genetics laboratory, and genomic core facility.
