Research Areas:

The goal of the Cardiovascular Center of Excellence is to improve the understanding and management of cardiovascular diseases through an integrated multi-disciplinary effort. Specific objectives towards this goal include: (1) Development of a close collaborative effort among programs in basic and clinical research, including studies of cardiovascular disease mechanisms, clinical assessment, management and prevention, and epidemiologic and genetic studies. (2) Focus on the investigation of cardiovascular disease with a particular emphasis on integrating molecular and cellular perspectives with clinical and population-oriented studies. (3) Development and implementation of more effective treatment and preventive programs for cardiovascular diseases.

Areas of Expertise:

Existing research programs in cardiovascular cell biology, pathology, pharmacology, biochemistry, epidemiology, physiology, and immunology have been strengthened by the establishment of Center-based programs in molecular biology along with a lipid research clinic and risk factor reduction program. Coordination and interaction of these basic and clinical programs signaling, vascular biology and angiogenesis oxidant stress, and vascular electrophysiology with clinical research and clinical trials will provide significant benefits to health care programs in the state.

Special Capabilities and Facilities:

More than 30 years experience with internationally recognized atherosclerosis research program under Dr. Jack P. Strong. Extensive archive of fixed and frozen specimens (aortas, coronary arteries, liver, spleen, adipose tissue, RBC, serum, kidney, ventricles), including autopsy data and atherosclerotic lesion analysis data, from black and white population groups. Areas of expertise: high-resolution light microscopy, electron microscopy, chemical analysis of human tissue, vitamin analysis, DNA amplification by PCR, immunohistochemical staining, epidemiology, biometry. In conjunction with the Departments of Physiology and Pharmacology, the center has been awarded a COBRE grant in cardiovascular sciences. This grant will facilitate further development of key core facilities including proteomics, molecular imaging, and echocardiography.
