Research Areas:
Molecular Science of Oral and Craniofacial Biology, Infection, and Mucosal Immunity
Areas of Expertise:
Oral/craniofacial development, oralmaxillary reconstruction, oral infectious disease, oral cancer, mucosal immunity, oral-based analgesics, inflammation, oral autoimmune disorders, dental implants, dental restorative materials, novel dental resins, DNA cloning, mouse transgenenics, DNA and RNA analysis, protein isolation and analysis, immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry, and elelctron microscopy. There are several NIH grants involving clinical trials and infectious diseases, see the Center of Excellence in Oral and Craniofacial Biology website, . There are also a broad range of Industry-sponsored clinical trial investigations and clinical research projects
Special Capabilities and Facilities:
The Center of Excellence for Oral and Craniofacial Biology is physically located at the LSU School of Dentistry. While faculty in five basic science and ten clinical departments are part of the Center, the majority of the research laboratories occupy three floors in the school of dentistry encompassing the basic-science departments. Within the Center is a centralized research facilities center that houses major equipment for research in the Center, including a scanning and transmission electron microscopy unit, materials testing equipment for measuring mechanical, physical, and electrochemical properties of materials, fluorescence microscopy unit, biological chemistry equipment, molecular biology equipment, and physical chemistry equipment. There is also a clinical research facility with state-of-the-art dental equipment, ten treatment chairs and one surgical suite for clinical trials and other clinical patient-oriented research.
Research Equipment:
(Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, inverted fluorescent microscope, morphometric image analysis system, cryostat, digital image analysis, Realtime PCR, thermocyclers, gel documentation unit, microplate reader, gas chromatography/mass spectophotometer, UV/vis spectrophotometer, high performance liquid chromatography, transformed infrared spectophotometer, dental clinic chairs, and digital radiography
