Research Areas:
The LSU Neuroscience Center of Excellence in New Orleans was established in 1988 to foster interdisciplinary educational, research and clinical activities in the neurosciences, a field of biomedical science focused on the central and peripheral nervous systems. This synergistic effort is leading to a greater understanding and enhanced treatment of the following neurological and psychiatric diseases: Alzheimer's Disease and age-related dementias; stroke and cerebrovascular disease; mental depression and schizophrenia; neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's Disease and ALS; alcohol and drug addiction; brain damage in the newborn, mental retardation; and hearing, speech and other cognitive disorders. The Neuroscience Center comprises over 75 clinical and research faculty who have expertise in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Anatomy, Biometry, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and Medicine. These faculty actively participate in collaborative biomedical research as well as the education of students in the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Neuroscience Program. Among its many projects is the Brain Bank, a tissue depository from which qualified investigators can obtain donated human brain or other nervous tissue of a known phenotype to correlate with specific parameters of interest.
Special Capabilities and Facilities:
The LSU Neuroscience Center is unique in its interdepartmental interdisciplinary nature which sponsors the acquisition and technical expertise for a number of Core Research Facilities, including the Confocal Microscopy/Calcium Imaging Facility which is available to interested investigators throughout the LSU Medical Center System.
Research Equipment:
Varian 6000 gas-liquid chromatographs with dual column ovens, flame ionization detectors, interfaces for system operation and data capture; Noran Instruments Odyssey XL Confocal Microscope Imaging System
