Research Areas:
The Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center is an organization of cancer programs with a demonstrated commitment to applied and basic science research, clinical care and education. These clinical services and research activities have emphasized the treatment and research of the minority and underserved populations of Louisiana. Clinical research includes the Southwest Oncology Program, which was recently awarded an NCI Minority-Based Community Cancer Oncology Program Grant, to involve minority populations in cooperative group studies. Research also involves the cost-effective practice of cancer management and control, screening and prevention efforts, as well as community outreach and education services focusing on cancer prevention, early detection and treatment.
Areas of Expertise:
The Cancer Center is developing three areas of focus in cancer research and treatment, including breast, lung and gastrointestinal, which are relevant to the populations served by the Center.
Special Capabilities and Facilities:
Outstanding programs in certain areas of clinical, basic science and translational research and cancer control already exist at the Cancer Center. Additionally, a statewide tumor registry has been in existence for ten years that has identified and published on important characteristics and needs of the minority population. A community and statewide cancer education and prevention program has been initiated to address these needs.
