Biomedical research conducted to advance scientific knowledge and to apply that new knowledge to patient care is central to the mission of the LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. Faculty from 21 basic and clinical science departments are engaged in a spectrum of clinical trials and biomedical research projects- 56 funded by the National Institutes of Health -unified by the goals of advancing scientific knowledge and applying that knowledge to patient care.
As the institution has matured, it has experienced progressive growth in ties research program. In fiscal year 1997-98, total extramural funding exceeded $11.8 million,m a significant gain since the $2.9 million in total extramural funding to the institution in fiscal year 1986-87. Funding from the National Institutes of Health, awarded on the basis of stringent peer-review, accounted for $5.8 million of the $11,8 million. Corporations provided $2.4 million in research funding for LSUMC-S in 1997-98, the second largest source of extramural funding for the campus. Other funding sources are the State of Louisiana, $1.6 million; and other federal sources, $581,332.
