Research Areas:

MISSION: LUMCON provides a stimulus for research and education in the marine sciences in Louisiana by (a) being a service facility for all Louisiana schools with interests in marine research and education, and (b) conducting research and education programs at the Marine Center that are directly relevant to Louisiana's needs.

Research Expertise & Ongoing Projects:

1) COASTAL PRODUCTIVITY including studies of food webs, trophic structure, and interacting biological, chemical and physical processes;

2) RIVER/OCEAN INTERACTIONS including studies of the Mississippi River, its discharges of water, sediment, nutrients and contaminants, and their impacts on the coastal ocean;

3) LIVING RESOURCES including fisheries and aquaculture;

4) COASTAL RESTORATION ECOLOGY including studies of vegetative species diversity, plant community structure and changes in habitats;

5) HUMAN AND INDUSTRIAL IMPACTS including the effects of habitat alteration, nutrient enrichment and subsequent hypoxia and noxious algal blooms, and fate and effects of pollutants.
