Research Areas:
The research by the NLU faculty has centered on the understanding of molecular mechanisms by which chemicals (both drugs and environmental agents) cause harmful effects. The School of Pharmacy serves to house the faculty offices and research laboratories of the Institute of Toxicology.
Areas of Expertise:
The major thrusts of these investigators can be divided into two broad areas. The first is the toxicology of pesticides to various organ systems, primarily to the nervous, hepatic, pulmonary and immune systems. Each investigator has brought specific organ system expertise to this study of pesticide toxicology and their research furthers the understanding of how physiological systems function. The second area of research involves the study of chemicals which may cause or treat various forms of cancer which furthers the understanding of cancer biology. Development of a state-of-the-art Cell Culture Laboratory in the School of Pharmacy has enabled this research to flourish.
Special Capabilities and Facilities:
In order to meet these regional needs for education, research and service in environmental toxicology, the Northeast Louisiana University School of Pharmacy has made a strong commitment during the last decade. NLU has demonstrated leadership in providing the only B.S. Toxicology Program in the South (currently enrolling approximately 100 students), establishing the first one million dollar Endowed Chair in the nation (currently held by Dr. H.M. Mehendale, an internationally known toxicologist), having the largest toxicology-related graduate program in the region (currently comprised of 17 M.S. and Ph.D. students), housing the Louisiana Drug and Poison Information Center and most recently, receiving approval by the Louisiana Board of Regents to form the Louisiana Institute of Toxicology.
