Research Areas:

The Health Research Center is the biomedical research center for the University. The activities of the Health Research Center are designed to advance knowledge through scientific research and education. For all practical purposes and intent, the activities of the Health Research Center are designed to strengthen, enrich and promote the academic programs of the participating departments of the College of Sciences and the other colleges of the University through scholarly and productive biomedical research efforts, seminar presentations, symposia and community services. The purposes of the Health Research Center are as follows: 1) to conduct basic and applied research in bio-medical sciences and to promote and encourage productive research, 2) to help faculty members to secure financial support for research and to provide both human and physical resources for the same, 3) to provide research training in the basic biomedical sciences for the graduate and undergraduate students, and 4) to render helpful public services t the Southern University community on matters related to the human health and health related issues. Some of our research projects deal with the problems of pollutions and the effects of drugs and their impacts on human health, cancer related projects, as well as social health problems.

Areas of Expertise:

Our research expertise includes a multidisciplinary approach to research efforts in the basic biomedical sciences. Additional expertise include purification and analysis of naturally occurring proteins, research on phytoestrogens and cancer, molecular and cellular toxicology, research on peptide synthesis and applications, toxicological effects of pesticides on some Louisina aquatic life.

Special Capabilities and Facilities:

Transmission Electron Microscope Facility, Small Laboratory Animal Facility, and the Scanning Electron Microscope. Both the transmission and the scanning electron microscopes allow us to study ultrastructures of organisms and macro-molecular. The small laboratory animal facility allows us to breed and keep such animals for research purposes.

Research Equipment:

1. PCR (polymerase chain reaction) instrument (Perkin Elmer)
2. Fluorescence and bright field microscope with DIC capabilities (Zeiss)
3. DNA synthesizer (Beckman)
4. scanning electron microscope facility
5. transmission electron microscope
6. capillary electrophoresis equipment with laser induced fluorescence
(Beckman) and capillary electrophoresis (Biorad)
7. luminescence spectrophotomemter (LS50B)
8. UV-visible spectrophotometers (2 each)
9. image analysis system
