The Center for Archaeology operates within the Department of Arthropology at Tulane university, providing work space, fundign and equipment for processing and studying archaeological materials, and stroage space for archaeological collections and archives. Our laboratory maintains comparative collections and a small text and map library and provides equipment for archaeological fieldwork and facilities for laboratory work, including drafting, photography and computer applications such as computer-aided drafting and data storage and retrieval. The mission of the Center is to promote archaeological research at Tulane and to enhance public and professional understanding of that work. The center has an operating budget that it uses to support archaelogical field research, to maintain archaeological teaching collections, and to sponsor a distinguished Lecture Series. Ongoing sponsorship to be one of the preeminent centers for Louisiana archaeology.

Special Capabilities and Facilities:

The Center for Archaeology houses laboratory space adn the equipment and reference material necessary for processing and analysis of archaeological materials. Our facilities included comparative collections of prehistoric and historic North American artifacts, library materials and map archives, as well as drafting and photographic equipment. Our computer system allows us access to other universities research institutions and libraries via a connection to the Tulane University R56000 cluster, and the internet. Our computer cataloging program was re-written in 1996 to allow enhanced data storage and retrieval, and complex file manipulation. Our laboratory also houses the Anthropology Department's Video production computer workstation, which is used by our students to edit videotape's of original anthropological field work. Our director, T.R. Kidder, recieved his doctorate from Harvard University in 1988. His major research interests include North American Archaeology and ehtnohistory with specialization in prehistoric and early historic Indian cultures of the southeast.
