Research Areas:

The Center's mission is to conduct research into disaster preparedness, volunteerism, relief, and mitigation, and to serve as a scholarly resource for the University, the New Orleans area, Louisiana, the Gulf Coast Region, and the Social Work Profession. Center participants have expertise in natural disaster preparedness research interorganizational theory, volunteerism research, survey and questionnaire methods, interview methods, statistical analysis, network analysis, computerized geographic information systems, organizations, volunteer motivation, human ecology, sociology, psychology, and anthropology. An ongoing activity of the Center is collaborative research with graduate students on neighborhood and mutual and models of disaster relief, crisis services, and interorganizational coordination.

Special Capabilities and Facilities:

This center is unique in its focus on social service delivery after disaster, and in its focus on hurricane and flood threats in coastal Louisiana. This combination of emphases on Social Services and hurricanes make this the first social work center of its kind in a research university. Also the combination of geographic and network research for the study of social services in disaster is a unique capability.
