Research Areas:
The Wisner Center was founded to assist agencies to evaluate existing community-based social services for families and children and to promote research in social work related areas. Since 1982, the Center has worked with numerous state and local agencies toward this effort. Research projects have included a longitudinal study of cognitive styles of low-income African-American children in the public school systems; a national study of violence in families of the deinstitutionalized mentally ill done in cooperation with the National Alliance of the Friends of the Mentally Ill; the cognitive affective small group model of parent education, and others. Ongoing research with the Office of Mental Health and the Office of Community Services is conducted to provide those agencies with important feedback regarding the quality and effectiveness of services. The area of violence toward caregivers of the mentally ill has also been a continuing interest of Center staff.
