Research Areas:
The new Tulane Cancer Center provides an environment that stimulates, facilitates, and coordinates cancer research throughout Tulane University.
The specific mission of the Cancer Center is to:
1. Translate scientific discovery to the clinical arena
2. Establish an exemplary model for the proactive integration of cancer care, research, and prevention in an academic setting.
3. The Cancer Center has also established an organizational culture of continuous improvement in the seamless continuum of patient care utilizing the full spectrum of skills of health care providers.
Areas of Expertise:
(1) The Program in the Molecular Determinants of Cancer is evolving three approaches:
A. Nurturing interactive faculty toward RO-1's in the studies of growth, suppression of growth and apoptosis
B. Developing applications for PO-q's by new basic science faculty recruits
C. Development of new programs integrating basic research and clinical trials with prevention research.
(2) The Program in Cancer Therapy is developing research efforts in one therapy and hematologic dysfunction.
(3) The Program in The Prevention, Detection and Intervention of Pre-Cancer (PDI-PC) plans to contribute to the prevention and reduction of cancer morbidity and mortality among citizens of Louisiana and the Gulf South by:
A. Defining and neutralizing environmental health hazards
B. Defining and neutralizing the barriers to cancer prevention and early detection
(4) A fully integrated information system to assure optimum utilization of resources and optimum outcomes in patient care in the most cost effective environment.
