A cooperative effort between Tulane and LSU Medical Center, the General Clinical Research Center provides the necessary facilities, equipment, supplies, medical, nursing and laboratory personnel for clinical researchers funded by NIH and other federal, state and local agencies, and the private sector to carry out creative research programs. As an inpatient/outpatient facility physically located at Charity Hospital, the GCRC is intended to provide an environment for studies of normal and abnormal body function and investigations of the cause, progression, prevention, control and cure of human disease. Examples of current ongoing research include protocols for gene therapy of cancer, trails of antiretro viral drugs and immune modulators for HIV infection and AIDS; neuroendocrinology research on growth hormone and growth hormone releasing peptides; and immune mechanisms in Type I Diabetes.

A second component of the main GCRC consists of a large outpatient area consisting of six examination rooms, an ophthalmology suite and two procedure rooms which are utilized for administration of IV regional perfusion chemotherapy and pharmacoginetic studies. The two large procedure rooms are also utilized for such procedures as bronchoscopy. Other areas of the GCRC include a core laboratory and phlebotomy room. The GCRC Core Laboratory is utilized for sample processing and such specialized assays as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The unit is staffed by a large group of research R.N.'s, L.P.N.'s, nurse technicians, nursing unit aides, clinical nurse specialists, a registered dietician, an administrative manager, a nurse manager, a biostatistician, core lab technicians as well as a program director and two associate program directors who represent each medical school respectively.
