Research Areas:

The Tulane/LSU (Adult) AIDS Clinical Trials Unit was established in 1987, with Dr. Newton Hyslop as Principal Investigator. In 1990, the Adult ACTU was awarded supplemental funding in order to establish a Pediatric Component, with Dr. Russell Van Dyke serving as Director of the Pediatric/Obstetrical Program. The Tulane/LSU Pediatric ACTU (PACTU) was funded as an independent unit in March 1992, with Dr. Van Dyke as Principal Investigator. This NIH-funded unit is one of 23 throughout the United States with the objective of studying means to treat and prevent HIV-infection in infants, children, and adolescents. The Pediatric ACTU has enrolled more than 200 children, adolescents and pregnant women in 24 different protocols, including vaccine trials and studies of the prevention of the vertical transmission of HIV. The unit is also actively investigation psychosocial issues related to the decision to enter clinical trials and factors required to maintain subjects on study.
The Tulane/LSU Pediatric ACTU has been extremely successful in establishing cooperative relationships with a number of public and private agencies providing services for HIV-infected children, adolescents, and women. The closest and most successful relationship has been with the Pediatric AIDS Program (PAP), a HRSA Pediatric Demonstration project, and sister programs RAP and CAN.
