Research Areas:
municipal solid waste management, water and wastewater systems, urban water resources, urban air pollution
Areas of Expertise:
solid waste systems, water quality, urban runoff, air quality, environmental systems/modeling
Special Capabilities and Facilities:
The Center's research is carried out in part at facilities provided by the University of New Orleans. Laboratories located in the Engineering Building include an environmental chemistry laboratory, materials testing laboratories, a hydraulic and water resources laboratory, a geographic and spatial analysis laboratory, and a topographic engineering and photogrammetric laboratory.
Research Equipment:
Equipment available in the environmental chemistry laboratory include pilot scale units for activated sludge, granular activated waste carbon, sand filtration, automatic samplers, flow monitors and other field survey equipment. A dual trickling filter solid contact pilot waste water treatment plant (capacity 2000 gpd) and an anaerobic biological film fluidized bed reactor pilot plant (capacity 2000 gpd) are available in the Center's facilities located at the Marrero, Jefferson Parish Wastewater Treatment Plant. Analytical instrumentation and equipment capabilities include GC and GC-MS with data systems, total organic analyzer, Alpkem Auto Analyzer, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, etc. The geographic and spatial analysis laboratory includes equipment that produces spatial models of environmental systems for research and applications in resource planning and management. Photogrammetric instrumentation supports projects that focus on urban pollution and environmental management. Digitizers have been fitted for automated mapping applications in a research environment. Instrumentation that supports a wide range of material tests are also available.
