Research Areas:
The mission of the Center for Louisiana Inland Water Studies (CLIWS) is to provide a focus on studies related to the protection and preservation of inland water bodies in the State of Louisiana. Areas of research and studies include identification of pollution problems and the sources of pollution, and work related to the mitigation and control of point and nonpoint source pollution in Louisiana streams, bayous, rivers, and lakes.
Areas of Expertise:
Numerous studies in which computer aided graphics and geographic information system technology have been used to augment and enhance water quality modelling; studies related to occurrence of disease and potential environmental causal factors; water pollution waste load allocation determinations used to assist in the regulatory process; studies related to sedimentation in the Atchafalaya Basin; and studies related to development, refinement, and validation of a reaeration equation for Louisiana's shallow, slow-moving streams (the "Louisiana Equation").
Special Capabilities and Facilities:
The CLIWS facilities provide for a wide variety of computer modeling with its existing database of graphical information for the entire State of Louisiana to include transportation and hydrography data; georeferenced water discharge informational database; and georeferenced database of land resources, landuse areas, ecological regions, storm water pumping stations, industrial dischargers, and water quality monitoring stations. The CLIWS staff is a unique blend of personnel who posses extensive experience in water quality modeling, water and wastewater treatment, hydraulics and hydrology, geography and cartography, and geographic information system use.
Research Equipment:
UNIX-based computer workstation, 96 mb RAM, 5.3 gb disk storage; networked with 3 Pentium 90 PCs with 32 mb RAM and 1 gb disk storage each; running Info CAD Ver 8.5, ABC/INFO, and Microstation GIS software. Graphical/GIS model of indoor state of Louisiana including transportation and hydrography from USGS 1: 2,000,000 and 1: 100,000 DLG data and digitized data in selected areas from USGS 1: 24,000 quadrangle maps.
